Vaping first originated in Beijing, China, by Hon Lik, a 52-year-old pharmacist, inventor, and smoker. He said the device was created after his heavy-smoker father died of lung cancer. According to Merriam-Webster, vaping is “a battery-operated device typically designed to resemble a traditional cigarette and used to inhale a usually nicotine-containing vapor.” Hon’s purpose was to develop an alternative to the conventional way of smoking. This article will discuss technology and explain why it is just as bad as smoking cigarettes.

I would never do smoking or be around people that smoke, as I know it is terrible for my health. My Grandfather, on my dad’s side, smoked several packs of cigarettes a day and committed to stopping when he knew I would be born. My Grandfather was a fantastic person, and when I was only nine years ago that Thanksgiving, he left this world early because he had cancer of the lungs. Thus, this was enough to convince me not to try it ever, and when there were people around me smoking, I immediately left the scene.

For years pharmaceutical companies have tried to convince people that smoking is not that bad if you do it in moderation. Finally, the Federal Government passed a law in 2009 called the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act which required manufacturers, packagers, and importers to show one of three health statements on boxes, advertisements, etc. However, the damage was done to many people.

The first generation applied direct power to coils with no adjustment by touching one button. It used a battery to heat waves, thus changing the e-liquid to a vapor, dispensing nicotine and other flavors to inhale. Then a second generation of vape technology emerged. Allowing a variable voltage allows the user to adjust the output to their desired taste. Vaporizers became more intelligent and user-friendly, incorporating a chip to read the coils and adjust their resistance and power for what they claimed was a safer experience with respective devices and their tanks. A third-generation vape was announced. That had an adjustable temperature and advanced chipsets to mitigate dry hits and damage from cotton wicking. This model had numerous challenges with limited coil materials, affecting temperature and performance.

After more research and development, the fourth generation of vapes surfaced, called ACM(Alternating Current Mode), to give users a better vaping experience by sending voltage to both sides of the coil. Now they allow users to control the Hertz Frequency and the voltage output. The main reason for ACM is that a more diverse set of e-liquids with various flavors could now be used.

Now that you have heard all the words to turn people on to this technology, I will share the blunt truth about vaping. E-cigarettes take nicotine in liquid form extracted from tobacco, sometimes with flavorings and chemicals that create a toxic aerosol to inhale. According to Hopkins Medical and I quote “Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are harmful. While we don’t know exactly what chemicals are in e-cigarettes, Blaha says, “There’s almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes. However, there has been an outbreak of lung injuries and deaths associated with vaping. In February 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed 2,807 e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI) cases and 68 deaths attributed to that condition. They also urge people not to modify their vape devices, not to use THC, don’t buy them from casual connections.

We now knew it was terrible when it came out, but it has been shown to affect your lungs and heart negatively! Hopkins Medicine also states, “Electronic cigarettes are just as addictive as traditional ones.” Teens and adolescents turn to them because they believe it's less harmful than cigarettes, have lower power requirements than typical cigarettes, find it easy to pop a quick puff, have no matches, and often have no smell. The industry is sending the wrong message to everyone, especially young kids.

Did you know electronic smoking devices are prohibited on school grounds and all other places? The New Jersey Smoke-Free Air Act (N.J.S.A) and many other states do not permit smoking. Kids are getting bombarded on social media to try vaping as they advertise. There are many flavors to try; terrible that this is allowed to be promoted. Many students love that they can stick into a USB port and are ready to go. They say a fully charged min vape can last 250-300 draws or about 5 hours. The highest-powered vape will last around 500-600 attractions and about the day.

Just writing this article gives me a bad taste, but I wanted to publish this as I know the population is getting the wrong message about safe vaping, but it is not! They do state in many journals that it is wrong but not as terrible as smoking cigarettes, thus sending the wrong message to kids. Did you know that about 15 puffs of a cigarette are equal to 15 breaths on a vape? This is the worst use of technology, and many are disillusioned by what they say it is. Suppose you don’t think enough to value your own life, at least value others who want to live a long, healthy life. I hope that in this short article, I have opened your eyes to the myth that vaping is ok. Please wake up now before it's too late, but better yet, don’t start.

Studies have shown that people who start vaping quickly alienate themselves from friends and family, lose their jobs, and may lose their lives. I wish the government would implement a safety act similar to the one passed years ago regarding the required health label warning. Vaping may lead to excessive, uncomfortable coughing, bad lungs, and cancer that may result in death. I wanted to share the topic of Vaping and hopefully wake kids and any adults who think it is ok to vape. It is not, and although many claim it is not as bad as smoking, vaping will still damage your internal organs and dramatically affect the quality of your daily life.
